1

"Reader, I married him," opens the last chapter of "Jane Eyre".

2

That famous line is music to Chinese officials' ears.

be music to 是短语,意思是"在某人听来极其悦耳、正中下怀",英文解释是 something that sounds extremely pleasant to someone。

  • be music to sb's ears(让某人听着心花怒放)

  • music to the ears of + 群体(正式写作:对……

  • sweet music to sb's ears(加一个 sweet,甜上加甜)

文中 That famous line is music to Chinese officials' ears

When the deadline was extended by a week, it was music to the team's ears.

For students, the message that the exam would be open-book was music to their ears.

For China's 200 million flexible workers, the promise of a place in the pension system is music to their ears.

be music to 一词,可以用 a sight for sore eyes, sweet music to sb's ears, welcome news for sb 等表达替换,看几个例句:

1)a sight for sore eyes——

After a long, hot summer, a city paved in osmanthus is a sight for sore eyes.

With gold back above 900 yuan a gram, the price chart is sweet music to long-term savers' ears.

3)welcome news for sb——

For anyone who reads the labels, the 129 million yuan fine is welcome news.

3

Since September the Victorian-era Bildungsroman by Charlotte Brontë has become compulsory reading for every Chinese student in secondary school.

compulsory 是形容词,读 /kəmˈpʌlsəri/,意思是"强制的、必须做的",英文解释是 required by a rule or law。它的动词是 compel(强迫)。

  • compulsory education(义务教育)

  • a compulsory course(必修课)

  • compulsory insurance(强制保险)

The factory makes safety training compulsory for every new worker, and nobody argues with that.

In most cities, car insurance is compulsory, because one accident's cost is shared by everyone on the road.

If the draft becomes law, a purely mechanical door handle will be compulsory on every new car.

4

The government happens to be keen to boost marriage rates and babymaking, and worries about women's rising demand for divorces.

be keen to 是短语,读 /kiːn/,意思是"急于、渴望(做某事)",英文解释是 wanting to do something very much。

  • be keen to do sth(急着去做某事)

  • be keen on sth(看好、对……

  • a keen eye(敏锐的眼力)

文中 is keen to boost marriage rates and babymaking 的意思是:政府正铆着劲,想把结婚率和生育率往上拉。

Most startups are keen to call themselves AI companies; fewer are keen to explain their data.

Small cities are keen to attract young graduates, and they are learning to compete on lifestyle, not just salary.

Some passengers are keen to grab their bags before the plane has even stopped.

Our fathers are both rather keen on the prospect.

be keen to 是"急着去做",be keen on 是"看好、热衷"。

A children's author and poet who had become a keen amateur photographer, Peters watched the butterflies and idly wondered if he could capture them in flight.

5

The independent-minded heroine, Ms Eyre, who rejects two proposals before ultimately marrying and bearing a son, has a thing or two to teach young Chinese, the government thinks.

bearing 是动词 bear 的现在分词,读 /ˈbeərɪŋ/,意思是"生育(孩子)"——bear a son 就是"生下一个儿子",英文解释是 to give birth to a child。

  • bear a child / a son(生养孩子)

  • bear the cost / burden(承担成本、承受重担)

  • bear in mind(把……

Many couples still hope to bear two children; the question is what happens when they do the maths.

Coastal cities will bear the brunt of rising seas, whoever signs which treaty.

One giant new transformer now bears the power load of an entire city district.

So why promote "Jane Eyre"?

7

Some commenters on social media call it a prototype of badao zongcai.

prototype 是名词,读 /ˈprəʊtətaɪp/,意思是"原型、雏形",英文解释是 the first model of something, from which later versions develop。

  • a working prototype(能跑起来的样机)

  • the prototype of sth(……

  • prototype testing(原型测试)

Every spacecraft starts as a prototype that is allowed to fail on the ground, so that it doesn't fail in the sky.

The four-day week began as a prototype: one office, two months, many doubters.

The dispute could become a prototype for how platforms and writers settle claims of copying.

Look, Mom, I made a prototype of the rocket out of macaroni!

domineering CEOs(专横霸道的总裁)——domineering 就是"霸道"最精准的对应;

也可以说 an overbearing CEO(盛气凌人的总裁)、a tyrannical CEO(暴君式的总裁)。

  • a domineering CEO(霸道总裁)

  • an overbearing boss(霸道上司)

  • sweep sb off their feet(把某人迷得神魂颠倒)

The domineering CEO is Chinese screens' most recycled character — ruthless to the world, soft to exactly one person.

For a few yuan, microdramas rent out the same fantasy for an evening: to be noticed, chosen, and swept off your feet.

8

In the book, Ms Eyre, a governess from a poor background, captures the heart of her wealthy employer, Edward Rochester.

9

His imperious, moody air fits that of the short-videos' stereotype CEO.

imperious 是形容词,读 /ɪmˈpɪəriəs/,意思是"专横的、飞扬跋扈的",英文解释是 expecting to be obeyed, in an arrogant way。

  • an imperious tone(盛气凌人的语气)

  • an imperious gesture(颐指气使的手势)

  • an imperious demand(霸道的命令)

Imperious parenting wins arguments and loses conversations.

Some classrooms are still run in an imperious style, mistaking silence for respect.

Every group has a friend who delivers imperious verdicts on everyone else's taste.

air 是名词,读 /eə(r)/,意思是"神态、气质、给人的感觉",英文解释是 a look, manner or feeling that someone or something gives。

  • an air of confidence(自信的神态)

  • an air of mystery(神秘的气息)

  • put on airs(摆架子、装腔作势——注意这里 airs 是复数)

The old teahouse has a warm, unhurried air that no chain store manages to copy.

She faced the defence with an air of calm, and the panel believed every word.

Good layering gives a plain outfit an air of ease — relaxed, but never accidental.

stereotype 是名词,读 /ˈsteriətaɪp/,意思是"刻板印象、老套形象",英文解释是 a fixed, over-simplified idea of what a type of person is like。

  • a gender stereotype(性别刻板印象)

  • break / challenge stereotypes(打破刻板印象)

  • the stereotype of sb / sth(对……

Real travel quietly breaks stereotypes — the postcard version rarely survives the first street.

Palace dramas run on stereotype, but some details — like the scramble for a sedan — turn out to be real history.

But a recent column in an official newspaper makes the point clear: "Jane believes that love should be built on spiritual equality rather than social status, wealth or appearance. Only when two people truly love one another can they attain genuine happiness."

Only when... can they...:
